Thailand Weather Update
October 11th, 2011
Below is a situational update on the flooding in Thailand that ABTA has received from the International Public Relations Division of the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
Situation Update: Flooding in Thailand
Unusually heavy seasonal rains have lead to widespread flooding in Thailand over the past few weeks. Although the floods are having some impact on tourism, the main tourist destinations in Thailand have not been troubled. The worst of the floods have occurred in central, north and northeast Thailand. Provinces in the south remain unaffected by the flooding. The main tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Koh Chang, Pattaya, Phuket, Krabi, Rayong, Lampang, Sukhothai, Kanchanaburi, Ratchburi, Trang, Ko Samui, and all southern Thailand provinces are experiencing normal weather conditions. All airports, including Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport, remain unaffected by the flooding and are operating normally.
Update for Bangkok
Popular areas of central Bangkok such as Khaosan Road and other tourist hotspots remain unaffected and fully accessible. The majority of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area is sheltered by a large network of flood-walls and drainage tunnels. The city government are utilising these in an effort to manage flooding in the city. Low-lying streets and suburban districts of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area could face flooding if the conditions continue for much longer. During these periods of intense rainfall, municipal work crews and the city’s storm water drainage system and working to clear the situation. Suvarnabhumi Airport and the surrounding area has significant flood protection measures in place. The airport remains unaffected affected by floods and continues to operate normally.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
