August 1st, 2011
With a quarter of its flourishing greenery and immaculate coastal areas protected as national parks and sanctuaries, Dominican Republic is easily the most bio-diverse country in the Caribbean. Dom Rep is a key destination for ecotourists, and provides excellent opportunities to enjoy the wildlife on show. Perhaps the most appealing of which is whale-watching in Samaná Bay.
The Dominican Republic’s Marine Mammal Sanctuary is probably the most renowned and surrounds the Peninsula of Samaná. Widely considered one of the first whale sanctuaries in the world, it was established in the mid 1960’s and has continued to grow and expand since it’s inception to ensure the only best protection for whales.
Guest tours are offered for those who wish to observe the humpback whales and listen to their song at close range. Between 3,000 and 5,000 whales migrate to the the Bay of Samana every winter. This can all be experienced in the North-East coast region.
